First Session

Well the Kruse Invasion finally rolled into town last week, and what a week it was. In my typical OCD fashion, I had a super fun week planned out, and in typical Justice fashion all those plans went out the window, but we still had plenty of fun of course! I’ve had this maternity/family session planned for awhile now. I knew I needed something super fun to keep the kids interested and willing enough to get through the “boring” photos, so I thought of finger paint. I planned to do the session in our second bedroom, which is full of west facing windows, perfect for natural light sessions in the afternoon. Well before I could blink it was already Sunday, and they were getting ready to leave. It was 11 AM, and there just wasn’t enough light in the room so we took it outside. As grateful as my walls and my landlord were to avoid the paint, I had no idea about shooting portraits in sunlight, even worse high-noon sunlight. So it was a shadow raccoon-eye fest. Of course there are a million things I would have done differently now having edited through the photos (and having read six blogs on outdoor portraits). But it was meant to be a learning experience, so mistakes were entirely expected and some even welcomed. I learned so much and will be that much better next time. Nevertheless, I had a blast, and I think the kids did too! (My sister will try to play like the paint was a crazy idea, but check the smiles for yourself. She was having a good time.) Here are some of my favorites! (And yes it was hard to narrow it down this much. Get used to it folks!)

The Boys Only Club: No Girls Allowed.Little Miss Thing found her way to the jelly beans while no one was looking.Let the painting begin!I’m a sucker for baby butts and Logan is always sporting the cutest plumber’s crack! The “why did I agree to this” look.

That’s all for now! I’ll have another post up later this week with some candids from the visit. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom and they were just as heart-stoppingly beautiful as last year. Stay tuned!
